Femmes De La Punk-March

Since the late stages of the last year it's become very clear to me that well,  literally the whole DIY scene globally has enlightned punk with the energy of some truly inspiring, talented bands, thereby having an evolution on the industry as a whole. Aswell as coming from a diveristy of bands and/or artists this week it's been the women who've come out on top of punk. It means no shit and yes to badass bands; so here's a few who have been getting my neck back into action...

Honeyblood

Whole heatedly, I probably should've known this band a long time ago but I guess everything happens for some reason or another that i should find them on the lead up to the ever promising summer of this year. It's not precisely true, I've heard their name knocking around for a few dozen weeks but at least now the listening is loved, it can be shared. After walking into Frome's Raves From The Grave this afternoon I beckoned with the owner to find some material to buy but only for a reply of a single. Not that it matters anyway, there are 3 palpitating scuzz punk jams to amp in to. Lets start with 'Kissing On You' , it slurs in and out of rumbling bass lines along with a bunch of thrown in, heavy verse strums. The vocals of "I don't know if we can ever stop/cos I don't know how to turn you off." makes a gritty and sexy thrash of power, viciously sweet yet gruesome alike their name . The most recent, 'Choker' opens up with a brutal, slow riffs along with the winding vocals and glorious spits into the climax of drums and dirty backing of guitars to wham in at the end. 'Bud' focuses on a slower ring of regret and recollections but still carries a obliterating structure. You can just hear how ravenous and eager Honeyblood thrust out of their records. Believe it or not, no these girls aren't backstreet Boston but actually Glasgow. They're just fucking cool, with a good image. Catch them at London Dingwalls supporting none other than Angel Olsen ( March 25th).

Girlpool

Sure, I only discovered these guys yesterday, but this has provided more than enough for weekend listening. They're two girls and they're from Los Angeles,(foretold destiny

if you know me well!!). The one thing that really catches me about Girlpool is that they
are a punk band with guitar, bass and vocals, no drums-which makes it even more intriguing music; could this be minimalist punk? well not exactly. Girlpool have so much going for them with the thrash of catchy hooks along with their inevitably American twang of vocals grinding each verse they produce being more than enough to digest. 'Plants and Worms' for example is a giddy low fi glitch of "Your pain is an endless cycle/the globe is an spinning rifle" beautifully bursts through on their self titled debut. But which song stabs out? it'd be 'Slutmouth' fighting the school girl carelessness and anger at "sometimes I just wanna be like a boy/cos I feel like a toy" idealises a gloriously yucky, sticky suppression into the band. However, 'Blah Blah Blah' is the most puke up punk the record gets, with a filthy bass and basically doesn't takes any shit from anyone.

( this isn't my favourite tune but go to http://girlpoool.bandcamp.com/ for more of their insane work)

PyPy

Perhaps being one of the highlights of this post, PyPy are a defined lunatic psych punk band made up of Choyce ( Red Mass) and Annie Claude (Duchess Says) just for starters. It's definitely a good contrast with Annie Claude's banging vocals echoing and bouncing brutally around each record. Having released 'Pagan Day' in February it opens with heavy on, sizzling concussions to only embark on practically claw-your-eyes-out solos. Second track, 'New York' has childhood/playground hoots layered onto a scuzz of headbang  worthy climaxes throughout the song to accompany the blistering drums that follow, making it one hell of a follow through. Many sections of their work include fiddlier sections with all out eccentric stabs into the world of Montreal punk. What highlights them from the rest is that PyPy like to project longer instrumentals rather than speed through at killer pace. 'She's Gone preludes with a harsh, screaming mini solo all to peddle bluntly with the mass of vocal and overall distortion. Most tunes peak well over four minutes and at this stage quality not quantity is very irrelevant, PyPy sprawl over this album like an incredible, intoxicating mess.

Meanbikini

They're dirtier and darker. Meanbikini have more than enough tunes to salvage over on Soundcloud, which makes a nice change. They have a more sarcastic, reverse take on songs than others of their kind. Take 'Monkey Song' it slams through blasting bass riffs along with their trash gone trend voices. 'I cannot play guitar' actually proves to be a great , low screech of bending strings with the intimately raw backing of every beat, blow and sweat drop you could picture. The most catchy is 'Sick Of Love' which in effect, made me wanna puke, it's one of the songs that sticks like glue in your head to melt any sweet, affectionate feeling you'd  come across in the 2.23 seconds it belts for. Boston? Massachusetts? nope only the punk patriot city of Landannn. Underground tube trauma doesn't sound much finer than this.

Tweens

Yeah, if your'e really into your music you could/should know about these guys already.
With their upcoming debut album out in April ( being reviewed none other than +Constantino Christou at earbuddy.com) I am inevitably jealous and will for sure, get the write up onto ampitup. So just to remind or introduce, Tweens who heckle from Cincinnati are made up of two dudes for guitar/drums and one chic for the vocalist. Still I take their music to be femme de la punk inspired. The lead up to their album has brought some impressive singles, such as the all thrash out 'Be Mean'. It reminisces a sweaty, heavier Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Perhaps an earlier teenage Karen O and the ultimately catchy refrain " Your sweetness is killing me" , verging almost on trash-pop; her screams and hoots make it a real agony to want to witness live. ''RATTLE&ROLLIN' expresses this further, being a fanatical whirl wind of pumped guitars and the original ringing whine of garage grit. Surprisingly it's taken a while for music press to catch onto them, blogs know it all.

Pins

It's been about a year since I found the Manchester foursome. And for sure the Northern DIY scene has been a strong player in many punk/rock bands upsurge and has seen Pins on a UK tour just before their release 'Girls Like Us' back last month. Their single titled album, which was originally released last year has a flood of harsh riffs and bitter vocals to the likes of Savages. Their new album incorporates a moodiness a whole other level away from 'Silence Yourself' , dipping into the thick black oozy gothic-ness that penetrates this record. 'Get With Me' being one of the highlights endeavours onto intricate solos and heavier clarity. It may be too temperamental for some, but I warn you-watch this space.
